For the Melbourne Cup, the RTM of NSW brought 4490 and 44211 (the 43 failed at Sydney alas) down to run a special train to Melbourne and out towards Ararat. Seymour's "J" took them up to Woodend, and then via Castlemaine, Maryborough, Ballarat then onto North Shore, Geelong. The Diesal hauled train met them there (after waiting for the Overland to pass) and the group changed back to standard gauge.
